Isolating a casual gesture and treating it as though it were a pre-meditated, deliberate component is interesting as a route to visual tangents. The same is true of portraying depth using only flat objects. What the two actions have in common is an intention to corrupt the integrity of the picture plane. When successful, this corruption should hold a viewer’s interest long enough to encourage a personal narrative in pursuit of those tangents.
