A Narrative of Abstract Components

Is a good definition of instrumental composition. Even programmatic music is built of abstract pieces, assembled to impart a sense of the title/topic.

It is also a good definition of harmolodic painting, in which unrelated components are introduced, in order for the originator (and later the viewer) to weave a narrative.
